Angie Battig: Sea Glass Series 3/6

My name is Angie Battig and I just recently turned 38 this past summer. I was born in South Korea where my American father met my Korean mother while serving our country in the military forces. We traveled a lot when I was very young, but eventually settled in Northwest Ohio.  After high school graduation, I moved to Toledo to attend the University of Toledo and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing.

I ended up staying in Toledo till 2010 and then moved to Puerto Rico to be with my current boyfriend who was born and raised there.  It was an easy decision as it has always been a dream of mine to live in the Caribbean.  And what a life changing experience to say the least! Here, I’m coming from cold winter months of the Midwest to a Caribbean island with warm weather all year round and stunning beaches.

I remember my first encounter with sea glass back in 2012.  My boyfriend’s family was visiting and we were all vacationing in Culebra, a sister island about 80 miles east of Puerto Rico.  While swimming in the water, I noticed something green by my foot.  As I picked it up, it appeared to be glass that was partially smooth and frosted. And while examining it further, my boyfriend’s cousin chimed in to explain that it was called “seaglass” and the history of how it came to be, the sheer popularity and abundance.

I never forgot about that conversation as it always fascinated me, but where would I start looking for this “seaglass”?  So soon after that conversation, I was suggested by a friend to check out a new beach in Old San Juan directly across from the capital.  As I walked down the steps to the beach and onto the sand, I immediately spotted what appeared to be similar “seaglass” found in Culebra in many different colors here.  And as I continued to walk further along the shoreline, more and more “seaglass” would appear.  After that day, my life had forever changed!

To date, I have been collecting for over 5 years now and sell on a part time basis. Puerto Rico is known for their patterned/privacy glass in many bold colors and red/cobalt blue colored glass too.  My favorite piece found so far was a wine seal from France dating back to the late 1800’s.  To learn more about my seaglass obsession, please follow me on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/prseaglassco/ and Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/prseaglassco/

Why I, Melissa purchase from Angie: I have known Angie for a few years now from multiple sea glass groups and love her passion about and for sea glass. I love the quality of the glass I have gotten from her as well as the colors! I enjoy hearing about her adventures and getting to know her personally as well through Facebook.

Sarah Lake : Sea Glass Series 2/6

I’m Sarah Lake and I live near Seaham in the north of England. Since 2016 I’ve run the Etsy store, CornflowerLake which supplies sea glass to jewellery makers and crafters all over the world. Previously my husband, Neal ran HeSellsSeaGlass which I was also involved with.

We started HeSellsSeaGlass in around 2011 and although we were frequent visitors to Seaham beach before that, weren’t necessarily aware of the amazing range of colours of glass that could be found. It takes a skilled eye to find the best glass!

We started our first Etsy shop because we enjoyed spending time on the beach, were big fans of Etsy and thought it would be a fun and relaxing way to make some extra cash. Although I’ve enjoyed a lot of crafts over the years, I’d never tried silversmithing. I thought it would be nice to supply really good quality glass to people with the skills to turn it into amazing jewellery.  You can find my Etsy shop at: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/CornflowerLake

Although I find some multis in particular quite breath taking, I’m actually more of a fan of solid colours. I love a nicely frosted, well-shaped piece of red and also love all of the blue and green shades. Cornflower is a personal favourite, hence the name of the shop.

Why I, Melissa purchase from Sarah: Neal, Sarah's husband was one of my first suppliers when starting to work with sea glass. If I needed anything special he tried to help with what I needed. He took the time to read my Etsy profile to get to know me and and ask about how my children were doing. Sarah has continued to supply me with these gorgeous finds and the multi's are amazing! I have never been disappointed in my purchases in the years I have bought from them.
